![]() The website of author Steven Pirie My short story Night Dreaming has won first prize in the Future Fire/Second Life Black Swan short story competition. The story wins a rather tasty 500 US Dollars, along with publication in both Future Fire and Second Life. ![]() ![]() The competition was to visit Second Life , and in particular Black Swan's enclave, and view the stunning, 3-D, animated artwork. The challenge then was to produce a story inspired by what's there. Night Dreaming is a story based on isolation. Believe me, Black Swan have produced a world of splendid isolation. Go see for yourself--you will need a free Second Life account, and you will need to download Second Life software to drive the world--but the visit is well worth your trouble. Find the angel, and step into the beam of light to its rear. You will be transported into an upper realm filled with lots of additional imagery. Black Swan have created a truly remarkable world of art. For those who don't know Nemonymous's mode of operation, it's unnamed because Nemo is all about anonymity (in fact, for past issues its authors would not even be allowed to make this "unnamed story" declaration). I love the idea, because stories are accepted by story rather than by who's writing them (submissions are also made anonymously). It's an even playing field. Des Lewis, Nemo's creator, is running a competition here where the prize is a free copy of the anthology. Dear Steven, Thank you for submitting "Mary: Edith: Bob: Frank" to UNTIL SOMEBODY LOSES AN EYE. Sadly, this is one of those "We're going to have to pass on your material" notes. I know, I know, it sucks, but please believe me when I say that the problem isn't you. It's us. We're afraid to commit. We're afraid to love. We're dead inside. Also, we're bumbling dorks who are incapable of editing a decent anthology. I mean, we'll be lucky if the final book has the freakin' title spelled right. You're better off without us. In fact, if this WERE an acceptance, your best bet would be to shred the contract and flush the confetti down the toilet like foul-smelling sewage. Not to mention that we've have acquired 275,819 rejection slips between us, and we're just dying to give a little back. So, really, you're paying the price for every bastard at Random House who told us that our material didn't suit their present needs. Who's sending the rejection slips NOW, huh? Oh, the sweet, glorious power...muahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!! Anyway, there are plenty of markets around that are much better than our loser book, and we hope that one of them snatches up your story. Don't let goobers like us get you down. Fight the power!
